Apple iTunes - A Quick Review

Introduction: What is iTunes?

iTunes, from Apple is a cool software that makes managing, sharing and organizing all the media files a piece of cake. iTunes was designed to compliment Apple's immensely popular media player, iPod, and the success history of this duo is known to everyone. But it has a cool bunch of features that make it fun to use even if one does not owns an iPod. iTunes is available as a free download from the downloads page on Apple's website. Here is a quick glance at the features that it offers:

  • iTunes plays CDs and Audio files out of the box and allows ripping or converting favourite tracks into many of the popular formats like MP3, AAC etc to store them on hard disk or the iPod. 3rd Party Media players are supported too. Plus, Apple offers an online store called Apple Store where users can buy their favourite music, videos and movies.
  • One of the most distinguishing features of iTunes is Podcast. A Podcast is a series of audio visual content that can be distributed free of cost through syndicated download or streaming. This feature has become a widespread content delivery platform on the Internet these days.
  • The iTunes Panel provides access to the latest movie trailers, audio books and games. The software comes with plug-ins to keep updating with the latest.

How it Evolved

Apple introduced iTunes on 9th January 2001 at San Francisco MacWorld Expo. Since then, new and enhanced versions had been continuously rolled out, adding something great every time. The latest version, iTunes 8, was launched in September 2008 with the name iTunes Genius. This version provides a unique grid view and a new visualizer for great multimedia experience. iTunes is now supported on both Mac and Windows platforms, although Linux and Unix variants are still not supported.

What is so special about iTunes?

Prior to iTunes, no single software application provided all these features through a unified interface, which is so classy and functional, that nothing beats it. As the iTunes application is connected online to the Apple Store, it receives automatic software updates and new versions notifications. And the value added services it provides add a lot to the fun.

Conclusion

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Using iTunes can be a delight. But not everything can be expressed in words. Getting hands-on with it is the only way to truly feel the magic and fun of iTunes.
