Economic Stimulus Package - Altruism As a Way to Stay Secure in Today's Economy

My husband owns a small tire shop in Encinitas, California, that was recently featured on the news. Each week he gives away a set of quality used tires, including free installation and balancing, to one person or family in need. It started out as a form of tithing - giving something back to the community and the universe as a way to say thank you.

But an unexpected consequence of his business largess has been praise and continued support of his shop by an ever-increasing new supply of customers who don't need the free tire program. Many of them feel that by being loyal customers of this small tire business, they are supporting this program and helping the community. And, of course, they are a big part of the program. When a paying customer gets his or her tires replaced with new tires, the old tires, if they are still in good condition, will be recycled into the free tire program.

How can your small business similarly partake in an altruistic economic stimulus?

Start a Non-Profit. As an extension of your business, set up a non-profit and solicit donations for products or time from other related service providers. Push yourself to give as much as or even more than you can afford to the local community and you will receive back more than what you gave. By doing so you are partaking in the karmic law of cause and effect.

See Our Creator in Everyone. Can that strange person mumbling to himself and stumbling down the street or the combative customer you had last week really embody our Creator? Many religions posit that God is in everyone and everything in the universe. How many of us really absorb that notion and put it into practice in some fashion? Next time you see someone odd that you'd like to avoid, embrace him or her instead and treat that person like the most anticipated VIP you've ever met.

Leave Your Comfort Zone in the Old Economy. Maybe you're a practical and conservative business person who doesn't feel comfortable using words like karma and tithing in your business plan. Use whatever words you're comfortable with. Times have changed dramatically. If you want to survive and thrive in this new economy, it's time to try something different.

Fear can sometimes stop us from giving. You may think: How can I give when I barely have enough to cover my bills? But having a consciousness rooted in poverty only begets more poverty. Let the fear go, know there is more than enough for you and for everyone in the world, and trust that if you give to others with love and an open heart, you will be taken care of even more than you can imagine.
